Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud,
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of blood and tears
Looms but the horrors of the shade
And yet the menace of the tears
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishment the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Although i accepted that sheet of paper without even a word of thank or appreciation, i found out later that it served as the 'fuel' in the core pile of my 'atomic' reactor, which buoyed me and charged the 'battery' of my defiant fighting spirit, when i was swept away 3 kilometers down the swollen Salween river and again when i was caught near Songhkla at a Thai Police Check Point and put into the detention camp for illegal immigrants.
My ‘Medical’ Alma Mata
Institute of Medicine, Mandalay was established as an unexpected 'windfall'' of a situation. It was not planned with any foresight. There was no campus, no fenced territory, no Examination-cum-Convocation Hall, no Staff Quarters, no …… While the political parties were making forays and inroads into territories of opposing parties, the regional members of the incumbent party thought it to be an excellent idea to 'harvest' votes by 'commandeering' a building constructed to serve as a State High School into a Medical College. Taking the credit for establishing a Medical College when there was none before and not even in the planning stage of the Government’s 5 year plan. At its inauguration it was first taken in as a 'Branch' of the Faculty of Medicine already existent in Rangoon since the colonial days.
When the Regional College in Mandalay decided to convert to a full-fledged University, (MASU), the need to absorb the Medical Faculty became inevitable. Thus we cut off the 'umbilical cord' from the Rangoon Medical College and became a separate Faculty of our own being able to confer our own medical degree. We had a change of four Deans before a ‘luminary’ amongst them took over as the Dean but conferred the title 'Rector' because, like in Red China, our College was later named the 'Institute' of Medicine. Some of the students who became university students enlisted in the University Training Corp (UTC). This Rector was exceptional and extraordinary as he was the only one who wore full military uniform when he did not even have a UTC training and was shameless enough to walk around the town with a pistol dangling from his army-issue belt ‘a la’ John Wayne .
During his tenure in that institute, he was subjected to 'Departmental' and 'Personal' Inquiry, three times. That would indicate to any discerning Academician as something shameful and a total loss of personal dignity and face. (Any Japanese male subjected to such humiliating situation would immediately commit 'Harakiri' to uphold and maintain the dignity of the clan).
